Professor David Wilkinson, TA Stuart Pike Political Science 20 – Section 1D 17 October 2018 Week 3 Short Essay In the second chapter of Mearsheimer’s book, he defends his claim that all states behave the same in that they all pursue power in international politics. His defense consists of the discussion of the logic, as well as the assumptions, that support his claim. This is seen in his 8- step “train of thought” that draws connections from the anarchic nature of the international stage to power maximizing behavior. The steps laid out by Mearsheimer make complete sense and one can clearly see how each step can lead to the other. While his steps and claim are obviously debatable, his defense is solid as they clearly demonstrate how Mearsheimer reaches his conclusion. It all comes down to states wanting to survive in this unpredictable world and the only way to do it is to maximize power. None of the steps differ from my opinion as I share the same realist view as Mearsheimer. There are a few factors that affect my judgment. The
