In root canal therapy we aim for, elimination of microbial contamination in conjunction with achieving a three- dimensional seal to obtain total closure of the root canal system. The three-dimensional seal is obtained by root canal sealers along with a solid core material. Root canal sealers are binding agents used to : - adapt the rigid gutta-percha to the canal walls - fill up the voids, accessory canals & irregularities within the canal that the solid-core material is unable to fill because of it’s physical limitations. - lubricate canal walls. Singh H, Markan S, Kaur M, Gupta G. “Endodontic Sealers”: Current concepts and comparative analysis. Dent Open J. 2(1): 32-37. Introduction

Grossman (1982) outlined the criteria for an ideal sealer which are as follows: Biocompatible ‘ Tissue tolerance’ - Should not cause tissue destruction nor cell death. - Most of the sealers used show a degree of toxicity which is greatest when the sealer is unset but tends to diminish after setting and with time. Adhesiveness ‘ Tacky when set’ - It is the most desirable property. - Should form an absolute bond between the core material and dentin, thus closing off any spaces. Richard E. Walton, Mahmoud Torabinejad. Principles and Practice of Endodontics – Textbook. 1939; 3rd edition. Ideal Requirements

Provide a hermetic seal - The sealer must create and maintain a seal apically, laterally and coronally. Radiopaque - Should have some degree of radiopacity to be readily visible on radiographs. Bacteriostatic - Should not encourage bacterial growth. - Although a bactericidal sealer would seem to be desirable but a substance that kills bacteria will also be toxic to host tissues which is not accepted. Richard E. Walton, Mahmoud Torabinejad. Principles and Practice of Endodontics – Textbook. 1939; 3rd edition. D’Souza L Henston, Sharma N, Chander S, Singh S, D’Souza R. Ease of manipulation - Should be easily prepared and mixed. No shrinkage on setting - Should remain dimensionally stable or even expand slightly on setting. Slow setting time - Should provide adequate working time for placement and manipulation of obturating material, then set reasonably soon after obturation is done. - It is desirable to have the sealer unset if a post space is prepared immediately. Richard E. Walton, Mahmoud Torabinejad. Principles and Practice of Endodontics – Textbook. 1939; 3rd edition.
