Social Science 2 On the Right to Rebellion: The 2001 People Power Revolution In 1998, Joseph Ejercito Estrada, a former actor who turned into politics won the hearts of the Filipino masses in his bid for Presidency. However, some two years after being seated into power, Estrada’s friend, then Ilocos Sur governor, Luis Singson, revealed the former’s acts of corruption in the form of receiving bribes from the country’s gambling under lords (Gonzales and Pobre, n.d.). Thus, on 17 January 2001, crowds of Filipinos staged protests by recreating the scenery observed during the 1986 EDSA Revolution, in an effort to overthrow Estrada from his position of power. The root cause behind the Filipino people’s disdain towards Estrada’s Regime comes from the allegations of Estrada’s corrupt administration. These allegations and accusations were revealed to the public by Luis Singson on October of 2000; cases of which include receiving protection money, worth Php 10 million monthly, from jueteng lords, pocketing Php 130 million from kickbacks from the budget for tobacco farmers, and a 100 million-peso “donation” from a private organization run by Estrada’s spouse among others (Henderson, 2001).
