Rhonda H ESL-433N September 29, 2019 Building Vocabulary for Ells in the Pre-Production & Early Production Stages There are different strategies that can help with building the vocabulary for English Language Learners. Cognitive and metacognitive are two strategies that can help with teaching these students a second language. Cognitive is a strategy that include things like thinking, understanding, and recalling words. Metacognitive strategy is helpful in monitoring and teaching the students to monitor what they are learning. Pre-teaching vocabulary before a lesson is a way to introduce new words to ELL students. It lets them not only identify the new vocabulary words but place them in text and remember the words. (Colorin Colorado, 2007) Some examples of this would be to label objects around the room, have lesson plans that include the new vocabulary, or include the words in different activities. In the early production stages, students are starting to speak by using little words and sentences. (Robertson, K & Ford, K., 2019) During this stage they are still taking in and listening
