Griffith 1 Tanner Griffith Professor Winkler English 101 11 September 2019 The Elements of “The Girl in the Window” Lane DeGregory is the author of one of the most prestige articles ever written, “The Girl in the Window.” The article appeared in a Tampa Bay, Florida newspaper in the year 2008. The article achieved an award called the Pulitzer Prize in the year 2009. The award is given out to the best featured writing in a newspaper. The story is about a young girl named Danielle who is later called Dani. Dani was found when she was almost seven years of age in one of the nastiest homes imaginable to the human mind. The girl, Dani, was extremely malnourished and was in very poor conditions when she was found inside of the home. When the police walked into the home one of the officers had to walk out because he was felt so sickened from the smell inside of the house they had walked into, and another said that the smell was the worst thing he had smelt in 18 years of being on the job as a police officer. There were feces spread all over the walls, and there were roaches crawling all over the place. When Dani was found she had almost zero fundamental skills or life skills whatsoever. She wasn’t potty trained, didn’t know how to chew, speak, or even communicate in any way, and that is just a few of the things that she was fundamentally unstable doing when she was found. Dani was rescued from the tragic home she lived in and then later was adopted by a couple in their mid to late 40’s. The names of the couple were Bernie and Diane. Dani goes onto to be fully adopted by the couple, Bernie and Diane. Dani then proceeds begins to attempt to develop some needed skills to survive in the world and be functionable. Dani began to develop some communication skills, and she also began to learn a

This piece of writing is truly amazing is many ways. The writing has many elements to it such as narrative elements, descriptive elements, and photography elements. This paper will discuss the elements of narrative, description, photography, as well as if the piece deserved the Pulitzer award. The story, “The Girl in the Window” is told from a third person point of view. DeGregory tells us this story in a way that does not give us her own feelings, instead she tells the reader what happens. The writing is told in a here is what happened type of narrative. A here is what

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
