Enzymes & Bacterial Metabolism UNIT 3 Enzymes & Bacterial Metabolism Preparation Objectives: Pre-requisite and preparation objectives are designed to prepare students for lecture and lab. Students should answer these questions prior to attending class. I. The sum of off the chemical reactions used for biosynthetic and energy harvesting processes is called metabolism. Pre-Requisite Objectives (things you should already know) 1. Compare potential and kinetic energy: Potential energy is energy stored in an object not relative to its environment and another object. Potential energy varies with position of an object. Kinetic energy is relative to the environment. 2. Describe the role of activation energy in chemical reactions: Activation energy is the amount of energy reactants require to start a chemical reaction (free energy). Preparation Objectives (Cite text page numbers after each answer.) 1. Describe catabolism and anabolism (biosynthesis): These define two types of metabolic reactions. A catabolic reaction releases energy and breaks large molecules into smaller ones. An anabolic reaction requires energy and creates larger molecules by combining smaller ones (Knowledge already known). II. One of the major functions of cells is to make proteins. Many proteins have enzymatic activities. Enzymes are involved in all aspects of metabolism. Pre-Requisite Objectives (things you should already know) 1. Briefly outline the process of protein synthesis from the gene to the completed

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
