What is Meningitis? Infectious Pathway: 1. Bacteria enters through the nose and throat 2. The bacteria can grow on various membranes and enter the bloodstream directly 3. It is not fully understood, but some bacteria can cross the blood-brain barrier and infect the cerebral spinal fluid. 4. Meningitis is the inflammation of the meninges (Dura mater, arachnoid and pia mater) that protect the brain and spinal cord.

Meningitis can be viral , bacterial or fungal Bacterial: -with-receptor-molecules -Haemophilus influenzae b (G-), Neisseria meningitidis (G-), and Streptococcus pneumoniae (G+) are the most common bacterial causes of meningitis. Viral: Coxsackie and Echovirus are the most common groups of enteroviruses that cause meningitis.

Nesseria Meningitidis Gram Negative Bacterium Diplococcus Has inner and outer membrane along with thin layer of peptidoglycan in between Infects host cells by sticking to them with Pili. It is found as a regular microflora in the epithelial cells of the nasopharynx of 5-15% of humans You won’t find it in any other animals besides human because of it’s need for iron which it gets from ferrin in the body Cell in Blue with its adhesive pili in Yellow.
