Kite runner written by Khaled Hosseini, is a book full of symbolic meaning and metaphors, implemented by the author to explore the theme of guilt and redemption, that transcends Afghan values. These themes enclosing ideas of friendship, forgiveness, loss, and desire for atonement, showed us that no matter what lengths a person goes to redeem themselves, they will always have a sense of guilt that impact their lives and experiences. It is often thought that symbols and metaphors are used in the book as visual representations to reinforce and put emphasis on important stages in the novel. In can be seen that symbols are used in the novel to highlight particular moments in key relationships. Such as the kite, in the novel, is portrayed as vivid symbol from the start. Conjuring up both painful and happy memories for Amir. It is interesting to point out the throughout the course of this book the symbol of the kite changes from one state to the other. First the kite acts as a triggering memory for Amir as he walks through Golden Gate Park, and it brings up overwhelming feelings of guilt for him. The kite is also a symbol of the happier days of his childhood, when he and Hassan excelled at kite fighting and kite running. But after Hassan is raped while attempting to
