Barnacle Lab Varying high and low tides determine barnacle distribution patterns in shallow waters. Semibalanus is barnacle found on rocky shores that competes for territory with Chthamalus, another species of barnacle. We hypothesize that the density of Semibalanus will continue to have a high density on the lower rock wall, while Chthamalus will be forced up the rock wall. To test our hypothesis, we focused our attention on rock walls on the coast of Scotland located in the tidal zones. From zero to five meters up the rock wall, we counted the number of individuals of each species located at each height. The species were distributed over one hundred days. We predicted that Semibalanus favors being submerged in water for longer durations than Chthamalus, therefore will be found in higher densities lower on the rock walls. There was a strong positive correlation between the density of each species and the height on the rock wall. From zero to one meter, Semibalanus could be found in large densities with very little surviving

Both species of barnacle compete for territory and their distribution patterns appear to base on conditions they favor. Semibalanus prefers to be submerged longer than Chthamalus and therefore is found lower on the rock wall. 1m 2m 3m 4m 5m 5 10 15 20 17.33 5.6 3.2 7.6 13 12.8 Barnacle Density Chart Semibalanus Chthamalus Rock Wall Height (m) Average Number of Barnacles Figure 1: The figure above demonstrates the average number of barnacles at a given height (across three rock walls). At a height of one meter, an average of 17.33 Semibalanus were counted with zero Chthamalus found. At a height of four meters up the rock wall, zero Semibalanus were counted with an average of 12.8 Chthamalus found. No barnacles were found at five meters above the rock wall....

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
