1 Raymundo PHIL 1000B Kenneth Raymundo (216298333) Professor: Stefan Rodde TA: Ariane Bakhtiar Death March 19, 2019 953 words Death is a Misfortune for the Person Who Dies: Nagel and Williams Death is a terrifying topic that we tend to turn away from. But what makes death scary? It may be because we do not know what will happen after. We do not know if what happens after life is bad or good. It will then determine whether or not it is a misfortune to die. I will argue that death, understood as non-existence, is a bad thing for the person who dies. Intrinsic value is the value of something that the thing has in itself. Intrinsic badness is determining something is wrong because it has some bad-making quality. Take a thunderstorm for example. A thunderstorm is not intrinsically bad, but it is bad for the soccer players who had a game planned. Because soccer players cannot play their soccer game, the thunderstorm is considered worse. In the context of death, Nagel says that death is not intrinsically bad. If not existing is IB, being dead for 10 years is worse than being dead for 5 years. Nagel would say that the longer the time someone has been dead for, does not make their death worse than someone who has had a longer lifetime. If not existing is IB, the time before birth is just as bad as the time after I die. This is not the case, because most of us were not there to experience the cool things that still happened before we were born, and we do not see that as a misfortune.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
