1 Explain the difference between internal and external fragmentation. Internal Fragmentation - When a process is allocated more memory than is required. Some free memory is left in said memory block. This happens when memory is divided into fixed sized partitions. External Fragmentation - After execution of a processes when they are swapped out of memory and smaller processes replace them many small noncontiguous blocks of empty spaces are formed which can serve a new request if put together but since they are noncontiguous, they cannot. 2 Given memory partitions of 100K, 500K, 200K, 300K, and 600K (in order), how would each of the First-fit, Best-fit, and Worst-fit algorithms place processes of 212K, 417K, 112K, and 426K (in order)? Which algorithm makes the most efficient use of memory? First-fit: 212k -> 500K (288 left) 417k -> 600k (183 left) 112k -> 288k (176k left) 426k -> No Space for this process. Best-fit: 212k -> 300k (88k left) 417k -> 500k (83k left) 112k -> 200k (88k left) 426k -> 600k (174k left) Worst-fit: 212k -> 600k (388k left) 417k -> 500k (83k left) 112k -> 388k (276k left) 426k -> No space for this process.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
