Allport believed traits to be consistent and thought of them as persistent ways of reacting to the environment around us. Allport’s characteristics of personality traits: “personality traits are real and exist within each of us” (197) Traits influence behavior “traits can be demonstrated empirically” (198) Traits are interrelated, meaning each personality trait comes together to form how a person’s personality is perceived Traits vary with situation and environment

Cardinal traits: These are considered the dominant traits. These characteristics direct most of a person’s activities and influence most of their behavior.
