Adrienne Unfreed AP History II 7/28/18 Primary Source Kill the Indian, Save the Man In this photograph two photos have been taken, one before and one after. In the photo to the left there are three boys having their portrait taken, dressed in traditional attire. On the right, the same boys are displayed after entering the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania, where they are dressed in ‘proper’ attire with clean-cut hair. This school specializes in equipping young Indian children with the skills and cultural beliefs to fit in and succeed in American society. These boys are an example of a ‘successful’ family who has been able to adapt and join into societal ranks. This means they have completely abandoned their cultural traditions, religion, beliefs, and overall way of life as an Indian. Many families attempted to convert, but very few succeeded. Unformatted text preview: Commissioners and later the establishment of the Carlisle school spurred the expansion of Indian schools to follow in its image, changing future native life in America. The Commissioners not only wanted future generations to be educated like whites, but they urged the converted individuals to prosper like whites, persuading them to become farmers and landowners. The Dawes Act opened up new opportunities for Indians to earn a living like an American individual and become citizens of the growing nation. An influx of families attempted to benefit from the act but very few received wealth from their gained land. The demand for civilizing natives expressed the belief of American superiority over the Indian culture and prospect to destroy it. The boys in the photograph are an exact representation of this judgment and an accomplishment of a cultural genocide for the generations to come....
