PHARMACOLOGY I MEDICATION CLASSIFICATION WORKSHEET Name: V P Date: November 1st, 2018 MEDICATION CLASSIFICATIO N: Anti-Infectives Cephalosporins DRUGS IN THIS CATEGORY: First Generation Cefadroxil Cefazolin Cephalexin (Keflex) Second Generation Cefaclor (Raniclor) Cefotetan Cefoxitin Cefprozil Cefuroxime (Ceftin/Zinacef) Third Generation Cefdinir (Omnicef) Cefditoren (Spectracef) Cefixime (Suprax) Cefotaxime (Claforan) Cefpodoxime (Vantin) Ceftazidime (Fortaz/Tazicef) Ceftibuten (Cedax) Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) Fourth Generation Cefepime (Maxipime) Fifth Generation Ceftaroline (Teflaro) Mechanism of ACTION: These drugs are a bactericidal family that has a similar mechanism to penicillin. These agents bind to Penicillin-Binding-Proteins (PBP’s) and disrupt cell wall synthesis and activate enzymes that break up the bacterial cell wall. The extensive damage to the cell wall results in eventual death due to cell lysis. Much similar to penicillin, cephalosporins are most effective against cells that are undergoing constant growth and division. THERAPEUTIC USES: The use of these drugs are constantly evolving as there are advancements and new agents being introduced. The families of cephalosporins are broad- spectrum bactericidal drugs that have a high therapeutic index. They are widely used, and have an excellent history of fighting infections. Cephalosporins can even be used in patients that have a penicillin allergy. Each generation of cephalosporins differ in use. The use of first generation drugs are not optimal choices for active infections. ADVERSE EFFECTS: Cephalosporins are generally well-tolerated and constitute one of the safest groups of anti-microbial drugs.
