2 Unions and the Modern Workplace Unions and the Modern Workplace As we know America was built on free labor, all that we provided was a place to stay. But in order to stay, people had to work to provide for their families, even if that meant working long exhausting hours of the day for little pay. They called this free labor because the immigrants were given work with no questions asked but they still had to do what their employer said in order to work and stay in our country. In a way they felt free because they got to work and get paid for it but the way they were treated and the amount of time they put into their work was definitely not worth the little pay they were receiving. However, they didn’t seem to care as long as they had work and a pay to stay so they can provide for their families. But as time went on, they grew tired of how they were being treated and forced to work for so little, so they tried to fight for their rights to work and get paid just as well as the Americans did.
