Daniel Washington 12/7/2015 Working Memory and Choking Under Pressure in Math The overarching question is how does working memory affect one’s mathematical performance when under pressure? The researchers in this experiment suggested that one’s ability to compute problem solutions depends on how high or low their working memory capacity is, as well as how rigorous the mathematical computations are. The independent variables in this study are working memory capacity, problem demand (high, low), and pressure (high, low). The dependent variables are math performance, accuracy, and reaction time. This experimental design was a mixed subjects design because the same 93 participants were being compared under three separate conditions. They underwent the same procedures, such as being tested on a computer and solving math problems each in different random order. Then, their performance for high and low demand, as well as high and low pressure problems, were compared.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
