The College of Philadelphia established in 1756. King’s College was established later in 1768. Then came Harvard University in 1783 and Dartmouth in 1797. There were no rules and regulations regarding who could and could not practice during this time. Prior to the first school, training to be a physician was done under another physician. Until the 1700’s, apprentices traveled with established physicians to hospitals where they observed patients being treated. The first state to restrict medical licenses to medical students who graduated from a medical school was Georgia in 1821. More medical schools were being established, however there were no set rules for admission, the programs were not very strong, there was a limited number of teachers available, and the schools were not affiliated with any hospitals. To improve education and practice, Medical Societies were formed. Medical Society of Boston was the first society established in 1736.
