Biology 211 Homework#3 Membranes and gradients Biological membranes surround every living cell on earth. As you learned from studying cell structure, plant, animal, and bacterial cells all have variations in what surrounds their genetic and biochemical material. Plant cells have cell walls, and bacterial cells have a cell wall-like component called peptidoglycan, which Eukaryotic cells do not have. But all cells have a plasma membrane that regulates the passage of material in and out of the cell. Eukaryotic organelles (ER, golgi, nucleus, mitochondria) are also surrounded by biological membranes, and regulate the flow of molecules within the cell. An extremely important part of how biology works relates to the fact that ions and molecules of all kinds (sugars, salts, protons, amino acids etc.) are almost always at different concentrations on different sides of biological membranes. For each of these molecules, there is a concentration gradient across the membrane. One of the most basic principles in chemistry, which of course drives biochemistry too, is that molecules want to be at equilibrium with respect to their concentration, a process driven by kinetic energy and diffusion.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
