HEALTH CARE DISPARITIES 2 Overview Health and health care disparities affect millions of racially/ethnic minorities. Everyone in the United States, regardless of their race/ethnicity, sex, gender, age, sexual preference, geographical location, and social background should be able to have easy access to quality health care. This topic interest me because I work in a facility where health and health care disparities exist. Literature Search The four journal articles I chose, were found using the “Summon” database in the Capella Library. Using keyword “health care disparities”, I then selected scholarly and peer review, journal articles and publications within the last three years to ensure I had the most current information available. I selected journal articles that focused on racially/ethnic minorities. Keywords: Ethnic, Minority, Race, Credibility/Relevance Utilizing the Summons database and selecting scholarly and peer reviewed articles, I felt the sources I utilized were credible based on reading all the articles I selected and researching the credentials of the authors.

It also encourages Structural Competency, which is the ability for health care providers to recognize and respond with humility and empathy to patients are affected by social structures. Social Structure is the way a society is organized in hierarchies through institutions, policies, economic systems, and cultural or normative believe systems such as race, socioeconomic status, gender, and sexuality. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
