Jocelyn Spencer Geog 370 Fall 2019 Dr. Mohamed B. Ibrahim Mid-term (1) Why Optimism faded away by the end of the first Decade (1960s)? Give examples. At the start of the 1960s, after World War II, a formal effort of international development had emerged with the United Nations Development Plan. At this period, only a few of the developing countries were independent states, while others were just beginning to obtain their independence. This marked an optimistic period in which the UNDP anticipated for a smooth and easy transition of developing nations to development using the same “formula” they had once used. This would come to be known as the Development theory or Modernization theory. In the 1960s, a smooth and easy transition was marked with the achievement of an annual 5% economic growth rate. With the formation of the UNDP, developing countries receive economic assistance from developed countries to aid with development projects that would ultimately generate income, primarily through agricultural use. In these terms, Korea has been deemed a success story because they were able to achieve a 5%+ economical growth rate. The US introduced large quantities of low-priced American grain which has been genetically modified to grow in any condition and produce plenty. Korea began to dominate the markets with this new rice grain. However, although there was a large economic success, the same can not be said for the social side.
