Exam questions will be drawn from the book, lecture, and discussions in class. This should give you a good sense of what is going to be on the exam, but is not necessarily exhaustive. Chapter 8: - What is developmental psychology? - human development, the scientific study of the changes in people from conception until death - How do you study developmental psych – two main methods - longitudinal- long term study of one group - Pros: truly studying development - Cons: expensive and time consuming, high dropout rates - cross-sectional- study of different groups at various stages of life - pros: quick, easy, get all data at one time - cons:cohort effect (diff age/ group diff skills), differences in groups based on when they were born o Know the differences between these two methods and the pros and cons of each - Prenatal development o Know the stages of development (fertilization, germinal, embryonic, fetal) Time periods and what is happening fertilization- sperm and egg makes zygote (embryo) germinal period- 0-2 weeks, division and specialization of cells, implant into uterus embryonic cells 2-8 weeks, cells develop into organs and structures, brain
