BUSA-250 006: Expressive Analysis for Management Desautels Faculty of Management Fall 2019 Class Schedule : Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:05 – 5:25 Class Location : Bronfman 011 Instructor : Craig Melhof Office : Bronfman 362 Office Hours (Subject to occasional substitutions, which will be announced on My Courses): [Office hours TBA]; by appointment Email : [email protected] Course Description: This course is an introduction to the type of university-level writing and oral communication that is expected in the Desautels Faculty of Management, and in your post-graduate professional careers. Classes focus on learning, practicing, and implementing advanced, clear, and efective rhetorical techniques and strategies for business. Additionally, you will meet once per month with three other sections of this class for a 3-hour Career Services session focused on improving your expertise at writing professional documentation such as job Cover Letters and CVs, networking and etiquette skills, and Case presentation strategies, as well as enabling you to expand your network of classmates in the Desautels faculty. The first of these sessions occurs on September 23, 2019. You will find each Career Services session listed in the Course Outline below. In order to ground your written and uttered communications for class in a common topic, we will analyze and discuss recent publications that examine how corporations operate and communicate in the contemporary economic landscape. Additionally, you will evaluate and assess contemporary rhetorical approaches to the paramount concern of sustainability. During the term, students will produce diferent kinds of documents and analytical papers and will receive extensive feedback and coaching on their written and oral communications. Learning Objectives: The main objective of this course is to help students to learn and implement efective strategies to manage efectively the quantity and quality of written and oral communications required in their courses in the Desautels Faculty of Management, as well as in their future careers in business. Since writing does not occur in a vacuum, the course will also cover skeptical reading and critical thinking skills. By the end of the term, each student will have put these skills and strategies to use in a variety of reading, thinking, and writing activities, culminating in a final integrative paper. Above all, this class should help you to develop your own leadership voices, unique to you, and should encourage you to

maintain a constant awareness of how you communicate your messages, why you are communicating them, and the ethical implications of those communications.
