What is Water Polo? Water polo is a very popular sport across the world and in California. In fact, schools in California have competitive high school water polo teams, which is unfortunately not the case in other parts of the United States. Most people do not know what water polo is or how to play it. This sport is very strategic and involves hand eye coordination, teamwork skills, and ability to think fast. Some of the factors that are important for athletes to know in order to effectively play water polo are positions and roles, rules, fouls, and understanding the flow of the game. A combination of the sports swimming, soccer, and basketball is water polo. This sport can be very demanding on your body and requires you to have good ball-handling skills and good hand-eye coordination. The water polo ball sizes vary based on age and gender. When first learning how to play, it is typical to use a size 3 ball, one of the smaller sizes. This to help beginning players learn how to have better ball handling skills before moving up to the next size. As players progress in skill, women use a size 4 ball while men use a size 5 ball. This is because the majority of women have smaller hands than men. Therefore, women have a smaller size ball to make to easier for them to grip the ball. In addition, water polo is a contact sport 1 which can be difficult when trying tread water throughout the course of the game. It is regulation that all pools must be at minimum 6.5 feet deep, thus not allowing players to touch the bottom of the pool at any point in the game. There are 14 players in the pool at once. This includes a goalie, two drivers (flat), two attackers (wing), one center (hole set), and one center defense (point) on each team. To further understand the set up and roles of these positions refer to the diagram. Whenever a team is on offense, (they have the ball) this is how the players should be set up. Like in soccer, the offensive 1 a sport in which the participants necessarily come into bodily contact with one another.
