1 Bettencourt Makenna Bettencourt Kara Whitman SOE 110 6 October 2019 The Ethics of Climate Change In the divided world we live in today, it can be hard to put yourself in other situations and understand the trials they face in their everyday lives. As the climate warms, not only the planet itself is affected but the human race is facing catastrophic disasters that are slowly building, one of those is the refugee crisis. In Refuge, Betts and Collier state that we cannot use a “heartless head” nor a “headless heart”, which means that we need to ethically but efficiently address this problem and work to find a solution that is viable for the future. In order to find this solution, we need to see how human impact is changing the climate and who exactly that change effects. Also including the examination of our developed world’s duty and how climate change and that obligation will impact human migration in the future. Lastly, we will look at the “duties of rescue” and developed worlds impact on climate change and what we will do to change that. These are the paths we need to take to find ethical solutions that deal with migration and climate change as a whole. Now we have reached a point, where we are no longer able to sit and let our environmental issues go without taking immediate action. A big issue that we are facing is climate change and the human population play a large role in the worsening effects we are seeing today. Humans

2 Bettencourt have had direct impact on the environment but only now in recent years we have seen the build- up and its effects. As we have learned in class about ecosystem services, we have also learned about how the human population is affecting them. We are seeing that “18 million acres of trees are clear-cut” and “over 8 million tons of garbage is dumped into the ocean” every year and the “increase of CO 2 emissions contributed to the planet’s average temperature increasing almost a whole degree” (10 Ways Humans Impact the Environment). Take groundwater, we are slowly losing clean water due to pollution and using more than is being replenished over time, which can lead to “deterioration of water quality, land subsidence and reduction of water in streams and lakes” (Groundwater Decline and Depletion) which could cause migration to find clean water. In the documentary, Climate Refugees , the narrator says, “I think for most people, the real question is how long is man going to survive on this beautiful planet?” (Kanopy, 1:28), how long will it be until we are too late to save our home? In watching the documentary, you see the effects of
