Krupit 1 Jaedyn Krupit Carina Jimenez American Literature May 14, 2019 Physical Abuse in A Streetcar Named Desire In Tennessee Williams’ play, A Streetcar Named Desire , Blanche visits her sister, Stella, in New Orleans. Stella’s husband, Stanley, does not like Blanche and does everything in his power to get rid of her. While Stanley focuses on exposing Blanche’s darkest secrets, Blanche discovers that physical abuse is a common thing in this neighborhood. In the play, A Streetcar Named Desire , physical abuse is very common and plays a major role throughout the course of the play. Towards the beginning of the play, physical abuse is already displayed. In scene three, Stanley has his friends over for poker night and is interrupted when the girls, Stella and Blanche, come back from dinner. This causes Stanley to snap. For example, “He advances and disappears. There is the sound of a blow. Stella cries out” (Williams 63). This quote leads readers to infer that Stanley hit Stella. In fact, we know that he hit Stella due to the details above like “the sound
