Schariar Milfeld (106971384) Compressed Temporality Within Katagiri Pertaining to Frog and Worm The story, “Super Frog Saves Tokyo” is a psychologically thrilling tale written by Haruki Murakami. The protagonist, Katagiri, is greeted by a giant frog who calls to him to battle against a worm residing below the city that causes catastrophic earthquakes. Upon reaching the conclusion, one major question that the audience has is if the frog or worm truly exists or if Katagiri has just gone mad. They exist, but not in the external world, rather within Katagiri. Murakami uses a strategy of ephemerality and personification within the Frog and Worm to represent Katagiri’s future and past self. These two characters occupy a certain temporality, for the purpose of exploring Katagiri’s own self in a compressed folding of time of past, present, and future. The Worm is a temperamental being that Murakami uses to represent Katagiri’s past, loneliness, and a portrayal of his ‘worst self'. In the text, Frog describes Worm: “With all the different kinds of hatred he has absorbed and stored inside himself over the years, his heart and body have swollen to gargantuan proportions- bigger than ever before” 1 . Not long after, Frog mentions that Katagiri has “silently accepted” difficult jobs, as well as putting a pause his social life and caring for his siblings 2 . The rage-bloated worm is an analogy to the accumulation of loneliness and burden Katagiri has had to bear. It is commonly known that bottling up emotions
