Schariar Milfeld (106971384) Wang Shifu’s Stylistic Changes of Crimson and the Ending in “The Story of the Western Wing” and Their Significance “The Story of the Western Wing” was remade in the Yuan dynasty which is considered a “golden age” for performance and dramas. Instead of intended solely for elite literati like “Ying Ying’s Story”, it was transformed into a more public and dramatic theatrical format. “The adaptation was the initial step by the Wenzhou Municipal Yueji Troupe in Zhejiang Province in its serial project of adapting well-known southern plays…The experts at the forum all agreed than an adaptation must respect the original at the same time depart from it” 1 . In contrast to the story’s predecessor, Wang Shifu was able to add depth to the plot and the characters; more specifically Crimson as an unorthodox matchmaker and societal rebel, as well as completely altering the ending to one that is more commonly understood and sought after in a romantic story. This is done for two reasons; one, to appease and entertain the crowd, and two, to challenge the culture of arranged marriages in favor to one where two lovers can choose their own partner.
