Schariar Milfeld Professor Emily Ye Response Paper 5 November 7, 2019 One main key driver that has caused a pollution crisis in China has been the immense use of fossil fuels such as petroleum for cars and coal burning for power generation. China is the largest producer and consumer of coal, with 80% of their electricity being derived from coal- fired power plants (10/31 lecture). To make matters worse, China mainly uses lower quality coal. Although using brown coal is younger, easier to derive, and the cheapest, it has a high emission and low energy ratio. In “China’s environmental tripping point”, Wang states that China is also the leader for greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 24 percent of the world total (Wang 2012: 116). Along with burning enormous amounts of coal, investigators have found that factories rarely install coal scrubbers and guards to reduce the amount of emissions directly released into the air.
