Post-Lab Questions 1. My two slow melting points of the acidic compound were 121.8–122.6 °C and 121.9– 122.7 °C, which aligned with the literature value of benzoic acid’s melting point of 121– 125 °C. I then performed a mixed melting point with my product and benzoic acid, and the melting point of that (121.7–122.6 °C) still aligned with the melting point of benzoic acid so I determined that was my acidic component. 2. My acidic component, benzoic acid, was in Aqueous Flask #1, because it was a stronger acid and the weaker base of sodium bicarbonate was able to deprotonate it without needing a stronger base in which case it would have been in the other flask. 3. I think my recrystallized benzoic acid was adequately pure. My slow melting point ranges (121.8–122.6 °C and 121.9–122.7 °C) were well within the reported literature value of 121–125 °C, although they were slightly narrower. And then I think my recrystallized neutral component had a slight impurity. My slow melting point ranges were 79.8–80.4 °C and 80.0–80.6 °C, which is on the low end of naphthalene’s literature value melting

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
