Human Physiology Chapter 26 – Fluid, Electrolyte, and Acid-Base Balance Study Guide This is the material you should know for the exam. What is the body’s water content? What are the sources of water in the body? What are the two fluid compartments? Which has the most water? What is contained within ICF? What makes up extracellular fluid? How is the ECF different from the ICF? What is osmotic pressure? Colloid osmotic pressure? Hydrostatic pressure? How do these types of pressures differ? Which pressure keeps fluid in the vessels? Which pressure forces fluid out of the vessels? Be familiar with capillary exchange at the arterial end of the vessels vs the venous end. At which end does fluid filter out of the vessel and why (what type of pressure is highest)? At which end does fluid return to the vessel and why (what type of pressure is highest)? Be familiar with edema. Why is hydrostatic pressure in the lower extremities high in someone with a weak heart pump? What causes pulmonary edema? Is the RAAS active when edema is present and fluid has filtered out of the vessels and into the tissues?

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
