Watergate Scandal Richard Nixon served his presidency terms in the United States from January 20, 1969 and ended it when he was announced the first president to ever resign, on August 9, 1974, due to a scandal that changed his life and the way the people viewed him forever. The Watergate scandal got its original name from Watergate Complex in Washington D.C which is where the headquarters of the Democratic parties were located at. On June 17, 1972, five men were arrested for breaking into the Democratic Party offices trying to get Nixon re-elected as president. On May 11, 1972, these men broke in the offices, took photographs of the secret document, placed wiretaps on the phone and got away with it. However, they tried to break in a second time but this time they got caught and were arrested. A security guard was the one who caught the Watergate burglars when he/she noticed that the locks on the office doors to the tapes were open. All this mess led to Nixon and his staff trying to cover up the break-in, and word about him being involved in this break-in hushed down until he was re- elected as president in November of 1972. Investigators, Bob Woodward, and Carl Bernstein received some information from an anonymous source that Nixon was involved in the crime by covering up for the criminals. Woodward and Bernstein approached Nixon looking for the tapes, but Nixon denied that he knew anything about them and that he did not have them. However,
