The Rise of Mammals: Synapsids (pg 710) Synapsid Skull (Fig 35.21) Pelycosaurs and Therapsids (Figs 35.22 & 35.23) When did the first true mammals appear in the fossil record? Pelycosaurs and therapsids were the forerunners of mammels First mammels appeared in mid Triassic (220 mya) Chpt 35.9: Class Mammalia Features of Mammals 1) Hair a. Follicle in dermis; shaft made primarily of keratin b. All mammals have hair at some life stage or as whiskers c. Insulation (cold and heat) i. Thick layer of air, buffering the layer d. Camouflage e. Whiskers have sensory function
