Where our views on Homosexualit y Come From Media and politics Since the 1950s, public perceptions of the LGBTQ community have been met with scrutiny, fear, confusion, and disdain. The term, “gay agenda”, was coined by religious conservatives and was used to disparagingly describe the cultural acceptance and normalization of non-heterosexual orientations as means to push perverted ideologies onto mainstream society. In previous generations, the media published reports that linked homosexual behavior to mental illness, so these reports fueled the general public’s fear of homosexuality and further reinforced conservatives’ argument that homosexuality was a “threat” to the safety of society as a whole.
