CHEM 131 Learning Objectives Dunmire CHEM 131 LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of Part 1 of the course, you should be able to: Chapter 1: Matter and Measurement Describe the scientific approach to knowledge (i.e., scientific method), and clearly distinguish between the terms observation, hypothesis, experiment, law, and theory. Describe the common states of matter from both macroscopic and particulate viewpoints. Explain conservation of energy and conversion between forms, including kinetic and potential energy at the macroscopic scale, as well as thermal and chemical energy at the atomic scale. Describe the relationship between temperature and phase changes according to the Kinetic Molecular Model, and predict corresponding changes in density. Use molecular concepts to explain how water differs from most substances in density trends. Classify atomic-level depictions of matter, as well as familiar listed examples, as elements or compounds, and as pure substances or as homogeneous or heterogeneous mixtures. Identify processes whether given as atomic-level depictions, chemical equations, or listed familiar examples as examples of physical or chemical change.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
