Christianity: Gospels: - Holistic approach - Old testament-tanakh - New testament-letters (or kipissles(genre of letters) - Gospels (4 Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) - Narrative; fiction; history; unique own genre; ancient biography - Book of revelation (unique genre, apocalyptic) Paul: Early church - Conflict/response - “Whatever anyone dares to boast about, I boast about.” - He was stoned - Spent night and day traveling on the sea - Shipwrecked three times - Suffered for Christianity - A Jew by birth and a Roman citizen - His career was being a tent maker - He was a Pharisee( persecuting Christians: Jews who believed in Jesus) - Alive during Jesus’ life and ministry - His view was that the followers of Jesus were threatening Christianity. - People who followed Jesus were arrested and brought to trial. - Steven was the first Christian martyr who sacrificed his life for his faith. - Saul was Paul’s original name. - Saul persecuted Jesus - Jews believed in a messiah - Converts on the road to Demascus as a result of establishing a relationship with Jesus. He was accepted and approved by Christian leadership in Jerusalem (Disciples/Apostles) - The 12 Apostles approved of Paul. Later on, Paul begins to call himself the 13 th Apostle. - Jesus’s death brings atonement or forgiveness. - Paul wanted to teach Jews about the Gospel, but they were resistant to his teachings. So as a result, Paul started to teach non-Jewish people. These people were called the Gentiles .

- Paul had a favorite disciple named Timothy. Timothy was a missionary who traveled to different cities and taught people about the Gospel. - Jerusalem: 1. Peter, James, and John were the authority figures of Jerusalem. 2. The 1 st disciple who obtained authority from Jesus was Peter. 3. Conflict arose between Peter and Paul. 4. Peter lead the Christian Jews - Paul: Paul lead non-Jewish Christians (Gentiles) outside of Israel. 1. Paul and Peter had conflict on circumcision and Kosher laws. But to really analyze their conflict, conflict had more to do with differences in beliefs. 2. Saved by faith through grace, not words (laws) 3. Died in 160 C.E. Marcion: - 160 - Love for Paul - “Live in the spirit. Do not live in the flesh.” Have spirituality and be intimate with God. Do not place more value in the material world. - The old testament of God is a demi-God - New testament: Jesus reveals is the truth of God - Gets rid of any scripture that has old-testament references. - In the new- testament, someone who teaches false teaches is called a Heretic . - The church responds to Marcion’s rejection of the old-testament traditions by affirming that it will continue to follow the traditions and the scriptures from the old-testament. - Old testament as scripture, traditions/heritage - Develops leadership in the church; canonization (making something official) Gnosticism: - A philosophy that influenced Judaism and people all over the world - Gnosticism means knowledge - Dualistic ideas - The material world is inherently evil and corrupt - Jesus was not flesh and blood, but a spiritual illusion Heretics: - A person who teaches false teachings Rome:
