Daniel Washington English 1102 Professor Walker 1/24/13 A Critical View of What A Phallus Represents A phallus is a symbol of the penis and a phrase that provides an in-depth and critical analysis of how the penis is conceptualized in Western culture and ancient Egyptian society. From a Western point of view, the penis is a connotation to masculinity and male superiority, but it is also considered to be an entity that is taboo within Western culture and so therefore it is not presented in an explicit and conspicuous manner. Instead, Western media glorifies the penis more obscurely through symbols that allude to it, such as the “bodies of automobiles” (Bordo 85) and the Chevy, which is an automobile that has been described as “the longest of the lot, measuring a big strapping fifteen feet plus” (Bordo 85). The major aspects that constitute the status of the Chevy are analogous to how the penis is perceived from a social context. Western culture views the penis as an object that can reinforce a man’s virility and his sexual desirability, depending on its size and how well a man can pleasure his partner during intercourse.
