For each, identify the type of claim (i.e., frequency, association, or causal) and variable(s) involved. Briefly explain what it was about the headline that lead to your decision. a. “OMG! Texting and IM-ing doesn’t’ affect spelling!” Causal claim: This statement is implying that texting and instant messaging cause people to change the way they spell words. b. “Bipolar disorder tied to mother’s flu in pregnancy” Association claim: Bipolar disorder could be correlated to the mother’s flu symptoms, but the disorder is not a direct cause of her symptoms. c. “Most soldiers diagnosed with PTSD return to war” Frequency claim: This statement deals with a proportion of people. 2. Only regular treatment Types of controls: 1. Placebo control group 2. Standard treatment group c. Determine whether this study has a between-subjects or within-subjects design. Between-subjects design: Different groups of participants were placed into different levels of the independent variable. PSYC 3530 S. Bowman d. Determine whether this study is represents a true experiment or a quasi-experiment. The study represents a true experiment because the subjects were randomly assigned to the treatment conditions (levels of the independent variable). It does not represent a quasi- experiment (or natural experiment) because membership in the treatment levels was not determined by conditions beyond the control of the experimenter. In order for a study to qualify as a quasi-experiment, random assignment should be absent from the study and natural occurrences should be variables that factor in to the experiment.
