PSYC 3530 S. Bowman probset3 Student Name Daniel Washington Lab Instructor Sonia Problem Set #3: One-way ANOVA for Independent Groups and Repeated Measures Instructions . Respond to each of the questions below by typing your answer in the corresponding answer box; the box will expand to accommodate answers of any length. For each answer, it should be clear that you know why the correct answer is correct, not simply what the correct answer is. In the case of short answer questions, this means you should explain how you arrived at the answer in addition to giving the answer. For answers that require calculations, do all of your work on separate paper, labeling every step; put the final values for any new statistics you had to calculate in the appropriate blank. Round values with three or more decimal places to two decimal places; round at each step, not just when you get your final answer. Express percentages as whole numbers (i.e., no decimal places). Upload your completed document to the appropriate D2L dropbox before the class when the assignment will be discussed. Follow the file naming guidelines provided in the syllabus; the abbreviation for this assignment is probset3 . Print out a hard copy of your work and bring it and your calculation pages with you to refer to during class. 1. The results from an independent-groups research study indicate that there are significant differences between conditions, F (3,36) = 3.28, p < .05, 2 = 14%. a. How many treatment conditions were compared in this study? 4 treatment conditions (k = 4 conditions, dfbc = k -1 = 4 – 1= 3 ) b. How many individuals participated in the entire study? 40 individuals ( n = 10, k = 4 conditions, N = 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 40, dfwc = N – k = 40 – 4 = 36 ) 2. Under what circumstances is it appropriate to perform posthoc tests like Tukey’s HSD on the data from in an experimental study? What do posthoc tests tell us that the primary statistical analysis cannot? A posthoc test should be performed when the null hypothesis is rejected. The purpose of the test is to determine which pairs of conditions are significantly different from each other. Also, a posthoc test tells us where the source of the significant differences are coming from. 3. There is some evidence that high school students justify cheating in class on the basis of poor teacher skills or low levels of teacher caring. Students appear to rationalize their illicit behavior based on perceptions of how their teachers view cheating. Poor teachers are thought not to know or care whether students cheat, so cheating in their classes is okay.
