Daniel Washington Sociology Field School Journal Entry Sweep 1

Journal Entry # 1: 6/20/15 June 20 th was the first day that I went out into the field, and the team consisted of three team members and one field supervisor: Olivia Maley, Dominque, Thomas, Kaprice Shepard. The first place that we went to was the Safe House Outreach shelter, which is located in downtown Atlanta near Georgia State University. While we were there, we did speak to a coordinator and told him who we were and what our mission was an outreach team. Unfortunately, there were not enough homeless youth between the ages of 14 and 25 that we could interview, but we did distribute fliers and resources guides to all of the homeless members who were at the shelter. I would say that my first day out on the field was a challenging and daunting experience at the same time because I did not receive any prior training on interviewing people and explaining what the Atlanta Youth Count was about. I did, however, observe how the other group members interacted with the people at the shelter, and I was able to get an idea on how I should approach people and explain to them what our mission was. After we left the Outreach shelter, we went back to Georgia State University and gave our fliers and resource guides to the field supervisor, Olivia Maley.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
