1 AP Euro Essay David Lee Middle Ages In Chapter 11, the Middle Ages began from the 5 th to the 15 th century in Europe. It began with the fall of the Roman Empire and ended when the Renaissance began. The Black Plague was in this chapter, and 25 million people died from it. The Great Schism began where the Church was divided into eastern and Western Christian Church which is similar to Chapter 13, the Reformation, because people started to gain ideas and thoughts for themselves that conflicted with the Catholic Church so they broke free. The Catholic Church lost a lot of its reputation with having three popes and its beliefs being challenged. Peasants and small merchants joined in the Jacquerie rebellion in France, killing nobles and destroying noble property. Of the 15 th century, attempts by monarchs to consolidate and centralize power the most successful was in Spain. The richest area of Philips II’s Hapsburg kingdom was the Netherlands. The diet of the townspeople compares to that of the peasantry with varied diets with meat, vegetables, fruits. Renaissance The Renaissance began in the early 1300s in Italy due to its rich city states. The Renaissance is similar to the Exploration time frame because they where economically expensive to support. During the Renaissance, art was expensive to fund, and in the exploration era, boats, navigation academies, and expeditions were very costly. The Reformation began with the new ideas of Martin Luther. Martin Luther had a huge role inside the Protestant Reformation. He discussed the indulgences the Catholic Church was creating. He created Lutheranism and shaped Protestantism. The overriding goal of the Catholic religious order established in the sixteenth century was to uplift the moral condition of both the clergy and laity. Calvinists understand the idea of work and labor as hard work, well done, was pleasing to God, and all work with a religious aspect was dignified. The Northern Renaissance differed from the Italian Renaissance in that the northern humanists came from more diverse backgrounds and were more devoted to religious reforms. An important feature of the Renaissance was an emphasis on the literature of Greece and Rome. Pico Della Mirandola understood the uniqueness of humankind by humans, lacking a fixed place, were the one part of the created world that could freely choose to rise to the heavens or sink into the realm of animals. The following characterizes the intersection of the hierarchies of wealth and orders in the Renaissance the nobility retained its status by taking in and integrating the new social elite of wealth. Jan Hus gained so many followers because his attack on papal authority and his call for the translation of the Bible into Czech resonated with many people who opposed to the church’s wealth and were experiencing an emerging Czech nationalism. The most important factor in the emergence of the Italian Renaissance was the rise of a wealth, urban, business elite.
