I remember when I was 16; I thought I had life by the balls. I was head cheerleader, leader of an all-girls’ gang, and boy-crazed like any other teenage girl. We lived in Brooklyn, New York and at least back then, you had to have street smarts to survive and those who didn’t had to find someone to protect them or risk getting mugged or beaten’ up a lot. My father called his business “thrift-lessness social control”, which is just a fancy way of saying “mafia.” He was what the Italians call a “made man.” He oversaw about six different families that lived in Brooklyn, Upper New York and parts of New Jersey, basically he was like Tony Soprano from HBO’s “The Sopranos.” When I was younger, I thrived on being a “mafia princess,” but now as I get older, I’m all set. For my siblings and me it causes us more harm than good. Especially when trying to have any type of social life or get thru one school year without being sent to the principals simply because of who your father was not because you did something wrong. My father’s hopes were that one of my two older brothers would want to take over when they got older, but neither of them wanted anything to do with it. They instead preferred to work under one of the other bosses with our family for now just to survive until they got out of high school or college. My older sister Amanda and I couldn’t take over 2

the family business nor did either of us want it. I lead my gang just to survive and my sister, who could fight like anyone, ran with me because most of all she was book smart, not street smarts. She wanted to become a doctor and had no interest in leading anything. 3

Michelle Yep, life was great at sixteen... that was until… … I met the boy that would be my love interest for the rest of my life, Corey Mychaelson, he was the captain of our school’s football team, a senior, eighteen, head of his own crew, and in my eyes, DANGEROUSLY SEXY! Ironically, I found out later that my two brothers were apart of Corey’s crew. That in its self should have been a huge warning sign, but there was something about him, on that day we first met, that intrigued me to pursue him. Besides that, my brothers were both going out with two of my girls from my gang, who also happened to be my best friends. How Corey and I didn’t meet before with me being head of the cheerleading department and him captain of the football team, is beyond both of us. We figured later that it was because up until then we were both in really bad relationships that were distracting and painful all at the same time. Corey I first noticed Michelle in the hallway one day. I had been zoning out waiting for Tommy to get his locker opened, and he was just about done fucking around with his books when she caught my eye. “Dude, who is that?” “Who? Oh her? That’s Michelle Mychaels.” Tommy said with a confused look on his face. “What?” I asked. “Well, 4

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
