A patient that I have been able to observe throughout the internship is a 34 year old woman who was a heroin addict for many years; because of her extended use she has developed severe anxiety and forgetfulness. She shows signs similar to an ADHD patient, and unfortunately that is what she has been diagnosed with instead of working with different cognitive-behavior therapy techniques which I think would be more appropriate in her case. Another case is a child who is a 13 year boy who is very defiant and refuses to co-operate with anyone, especially any authority figures in his life, he was diagnosed with ODD (oppositional defiant disorder) instead of given help as a growing, with raging hormones, teenage boy which could receive the proper help with parent couching and/or family therapy.

Unformatted text preview: I think it can become difficult for a psychologist and/or psychiatrist to diagnose a patient and use the appropriate therapy to help them. At the clinic where I have had the privilege to do my internship there are both psychiatrist and psychologist and they have to work together to help the patient to achieve the goals that are set in the treatment plan. The psychologist get to spend an hour with the patient in each session whereas the doctors only get 15-20 minutes, so if the therapist do not agree with a diagnose or a medication they will bring up their concerns and come up to a solution. I think that resolving the issue in this manner is the best way because sometimes patients can be miss-diagnosed if not careful and (in my opinion) sometimes over-medicated....
