Culture Summary for Peru According to Tamara Bray, Sarah Berry, and John Beierle (2005), the Inka civilization traces back to a group of indigenous people who spoke the Quechua language which is an agglutinative language with a specific sentence structure. The Inka originally settled in the Cusco Valley of south-central Peru around 1200 AD as soon as they established their leadership over the region their empire slowly began expanding over other highland and coastal areas. The Inka eventually gained control of the Andean population of about twelve million people during the sixteenth century. During the Spanish invasion, the Inka empire continued to expand, extending 2,485 miles from the north to the south, and 300 miles from the east to the west, surrounding more than a hundred societies. The Inka imposed their Quechua language on the conquered populations to provide a common form of communication throughout the empire. The Inca Empire, howev er, consisted of a very large number of conquered tribes who voluntarily embraced both the Inca and Quechua cultures. The Inka Empire is centrally located in the capital city of Cuzco which surrounds the Andean Highlands and a large part of the Pacific Coastal Region from northern Ecuador on the Colombian border to north-central Chile and north-eastern Argentina, between the cities of Santiago and Mendoza. The population of the capital city of Cusco ranges from 15,000 to 20,000. However, if residents of the surrounding suburban areas were included, the population would have increased to 100,000. The Inca Empire consisted of two main sectors. These sectors were the sacred core of the Inca nobles, priests, and government officials. The sectors served as the center of religious and political activity, as well as the outer residential districts. The City of Cusco includes many Inka settlements, such as rural villages comprising between five and twenty households and royal Inka estates, which were luxurious sites that were specifically for Inka royalty. These luxurious sites included Ollantaytambo,

Machu Picchu, Chinchero and Pisac, all located in the sacred town of Urubamba valley below Cusco. State settlements are typically constructed based on orthogonal and radial patterns. Large public plazas were often located, either centrally or laterally. The planning of settlements represents the order and relations between society and the cosmos. Each settlement built by the Inka has been acclimated to certain topographical, social, astronomical and economic environments of its location.
