Emilija Knezevic Foy AP English Literature and Composition 21 November 2019 “After Death” Analysis In Christina Rossetti’s “After Death,” the speaker, whose love is unrequited, presents the pain she feels by comparing her inner state to the darkness of death. The speaker addresses common themes of death, tragic love, and the possibility of an afterlife through the perspective of a woman in a sonnet written in iambic pentameter. Rossetti’s use of imagery, symbolism, and euphemism accurately portrays the unrequited love of the speaker. Rossetti uses imagery and vivid visual details that set the setting of the poem, countering the poetry norms at the time which included hard-edge realism. Rossetti begins the poem with a short passage, setting the scene, “The curtains were half drawn, the floor was swept And strewn with rushes, rosemary and may Lay thick upon the bed on which I lay, where through the lattice ivy-shadows crept.” This description decorates the poem and affords a complete understanding
