The validity and reliability of evidence: the MMR Vaccine and Autism In 1998, a British physician named Dr. Andrew Wakefield and his colleagues published a paper in the journal The Lancet , reporting that children had developed behavioral symptoms shortly after receiving the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine (Wakefield et al ., 1998). This study reported observations of 12 children that had received the MMR vaccine and all 12 children reportedly developed gastrointestinal issues after being immunized. Additionally, 8 of these 12 children lost substantial cognitive and language abilities, as reported by their parents. Under “Findings”, the authors write: “All 12 children had intestinal abnormalities … Behavioural disorders included autism (nine), disintegrative psychosis (one), and possible postviral or vaccinal encephalitis (two). (Wakefield et al., 1998, p 637).” In the discussion, they write: “Intestinal and behavioural pathologies may have occurred together by chance, reflecting a selection bias in a self-referred group; however, the uniformity of the intestinal pathological changes and the fact that previous studies have found intestinal dysfunction in children with autistic-spectrum disorders, suggests that the connection is real and reflects a unique disease process. (ibid, p 639)” Towards the end, they write:
