1 Cindy Herrera 11/8/19 REL 1300 Summary #2 - around-world-delhi/index.html Hinduism is the oldest and third largest religion of the world, mainly practiced in India and parts of southeast Asia. Hinduism is not like other organized religions; it embraces a variety of religious traditions commonly referred to as a way of life. Hinduism is a henotheistic religion that only worships one single God, known as Brahman. Although Hindus only worship one single God, other Gods and Goddesses are still acknowledged. Hindus believe in eternal existence; they believe that their soul will continue to be reincarnated over and over again as it continues to live on forever as it passes through different lifeforms. Hinduism is more of a spiritual religion that values all living things especially the need to care for the environment. Hindus value a variety of sacred texts the primary being the Vedas which contains ancient scriptures of Hinduism. Although Hinduism has several beliefs and practices I would like to focus on marriage and its significance within this religion. For many centuries’ marriage has played a huge part in society thought out all cultures as it is viewed as one of the greatest and most important institutions. In India, marriages are quite different regarding traditions and ceremonies, for many Hindus marriage is a sacred union between two families instead of two individuals. Marriages are idealized in India especially within the Hinduism religion as it is considered to be one of the essential sacraments that every Hindu must follow. A Hindu marriage is essential not only to help establish a relationship between two families but also for performing religious and spiritual

2 duties. Not only is marriage considered a sacred union, but it is also a very important social institution. Most marriages in India are arranged which is customary throughout Hindu marriages besides dowries. One of the main responsibilities of a parent is to find a man that is best suited for their children, they believe that their daughters should be married as soon as they turn twenty and their sons as soon as they begin working. As I previously mentioned dowries are also considered a custom among many Hindu marriages which is when the father dresses his daughter up with expensive garments and jewels and is then given to the groom of the fathers choosing as a gift. A dowry can be considered more of a forced marriage that has eventually become more of a bargain that is done by the father. Women and young children are subjected and at times bargained giving their families security and stability ensuring that they would be financially safe.
