It should not be done all at once. **Note- questions that are in BOLD are frequently tested concepts on the AP Exam Section 1.01 Psychology Defined: What is Psych? Pages 2-5 1. Explain the four primary goals of Psychology? A. Description- involves observing a behavior noting everything about it. What is happening, where it happens, to who it happens, and under what circumstances it seems to happen- provides the observations B. Explanation- Is why it is happening. Based on observations the psych might try to come up with a tentative explanation. Finding explanations for behavior is a very important step in the process of forming theories of behavior -helps build the theory C. Prediction- Is when will it happen again. Determining what will happen in the future is a prediction D. Control- Is how it can be changed. The focus of control or the modification of some behavior is to change a behavior from an undesirable one to a desirable one Section 1.02 Psych History & Modern: Then & Now Pages 6-19 2. How did Wilhelm Wundt contribute to the study of Psychology ? Explain how Objective Introspection was used. He set up the first laboratory to apply scientific principles to the study of the human mind. Wundt believed that consciousness, the state of being aware of external events could be broken down into thoughts, experiences, emotions, and other basic elements. He showed that introspection could be used to study mental states in replicable laboratory experiments.

3. Explain structuralism and Edward Titchener’s contribution to psychology . Structuralism because the focus of study was the structure of the mind. He believed that every experience could be broken down into its individual emotions and sensations His contributions to psychology were functionalism and structuralism. 4. Explain functionalism and William James’ contribution to psychology . James focused on how the mind allows people to function in the real world- how people work, play, and adapt to their surroundings a viewpoint he called functionalism. He was interested in the importance of consciousness to everyday life rather than just its analysis. 5. Identify some of the notable minority contributors to the study of Psychology.
