Part 1: Psychology: The scientific study of behavior and mental processes Mental Processes: all internal hidden activity in the mind like feelings or emotions Psychology is 138 years old (New-ish) Willhelm Wundt: attempted to put scientific principles to the study of the human mind. Believed consciousness could be broken down into thoughts, experiences, emotions and other basic elements. Created objective introspection. Objective introspection: learning to think without bias of one's own thoughts. Edward Titchener: Student of Willhelm Wundt Expanded Wundt’s ideas into a new perspective Called this perspective structuralism Believed avery experience could be broken down into individual emotions and sensations Thought objective introspection could be used on thoughts and sensations Structuralism: a study focused on the structure of the mind (Died out in early 1900s) Margaret F. Washburn: First female with a Ph.D in psychology Titchener’s only graduate student that year Published The Animal Mind in 1908 it was considered an important work in that era of psychology William James: Wrote the textbook Principles of Psychology that can still be found today More interested in the importance of consciousness in everyday life than its analysis Didn’t believe consciousness could be studied yet Focused on how the mind allows people to function in reality Called this perspective functionalism Functionalism: the study of how the mind lets people work, play and adapt to their surroundings. Mary Whiton Calkins: Had all the qualifications of a Ph.D but was denied the degree because of her gender. Established a psychological laboratory at Wellesley College Had some of the earliest research on human memory and psychology of the self Was the first female president of the American Psychological Association William James’ student Francis Cecil Sumner (Father of African American Psychology): First African American to earn a Ph.D in psychology at Clark University Eventually became the chair of the psychology department at Harvard University *many minorities had substantial work in the field of psychology there are more now, but still few in comparison to the whole Max Wertheimer:
