Be familiar with general movement of wastes (plasma to kidneys to ureter to bladder to urethra). What is the functional unit of the kidney? Be familiar with pathway through the nephron (glomerulus to Bowman’s capsule to proximal tubule to Loop of Henle (descending limb to ascending limb) to distal tubule to collecting ducts Where in the nephron does filtration take place? Describe the movement of fluid during filtration (plasma to renal corpuscle, filtrate enters nephron lumen). Describe the movement of substances during reabsorption (nephron lumen to blood via peritubular capillaries). Describe the movement of substances during secretion. What is the proximal tubule function? Loop of Henle function? What determines the final osmolarity of urine in the collecting ducts? What happens when more ADH is released (water conserved or not)? Be familiar with the negative feedback loop for maintaining blood osmolarity. Reabsorption of water is influenced by what hormone? What hormone influences Na+ reabsorption and K+ secretion?
