Martin Valábik Wolfgang Keller at Konigsbrau-TAK 1. What is your analysis of the situation facing Keller as he returns to Kiev? Wolfgang Keller, the Managing Director of Königsbräu´s Ukrainian subsidiary, Königsbräu-TAK A.E. during the flight from Rio to Zurich from a two-month temporary assignment in Brazil was reviewing several problems that would need his attention when he returned to Kiev in two weeks. The most urgent issue of them was the annual performance appraisal of Dmitri Brodsky, the commercial director of the firm. He had still delay finalizing Brodsky’s second annual performance review in the company. Keller introduced a new commercial strategy. The keystone of the strategy was to strengthen hand-on contact between salespeople and distributors and also provide more support to distributors by sales forces of the company. Keller is not certain if Brodsky is the man which is able to work in accordance with the commercial strategy, due to his previous performance which Keller did not like. In addition, the subsidiary´s chairman Vladimir Antonov push on Keller to fire Brodsky, but in Keller´s eyes it would be much more complicated to find a qualified replacement and also complicated would be to defense this decision in the eyes of Vorstand´s. Keller wanted even more time to reconsider the situation before he could make another decision. It is the reason why he did not complete the Brodsky´s final appraisal. Once he returned to the Kyiv he can no longer wait, and he must submit the annual performance appraisal. Keller is now considering all of the options which he can do to solve the situation with Brodsky, if he do not fire him. It is certain that if Keller will change nothing, the Brodsky´s performance which he thinks is not sufficient will also not change and will obstruct to implement Keller´s strategy to the company. Another difficulty position is related with Brodsky´s salary. If he will not increase his salary, there is risk that Brodsky will leave the company but if he increase a lot Brodsky may think that it is signal for his positive performance.
